Morning Sickness Survival Guide: 8 Effective Strategies for Navigating Early Pregnancy

Ah, the joy of expecting a little one! Pregnancy is a miraculous journey, but it’s not always smooth sailing, especially during the first trimester. Morning sickness, that infamous queasiness that often strikes in the early hours and sometimes tends to linger throughout the entire day, can put a damper on your excitement. Fear not, though! In this post, I will guide you through some effective ways to fight morning sickness during those delicate early weeks of pregnancy. If you are currently experiencing morning sickness, you may find that you need a combination of these remedies to help alleviate the symptoms. Remember everyone is different, what worked for me may not work for you.
Understanding Morning Sickness

Before we delve into the remedies, it’s essential to understand what causes morning sickness. The exact cause is not pinpointed, but it’s widely believed to be linked to hormonal changes in your body, specifically the increase in human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels. This hormonal rollercoaster can trigger nausea and vomiting, commonly occurring in the morning but potentially striking at any time of the day.

 

Here are some effective ways of relieving that pesky pregnancy nausea.

1. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can worsen nausea. Sip water, electrolytes or ginger ale throughout the day. You can also try sucking on ice cubes to stay hydrated and calm your stomach. I know sometimes even the thought of swallowing water can be daunting during this period of your pregnancy but trust me, it will help.

2. Eat Small, Frequent Meals

Instead of having three large meals, opt for smaller, nutritious snacks throughout the day. An empty stomach can intensify nausea, so keep some crackers, dry fruits, plain cereals like corn flakes or Cheerios or ginger biscuits handy to nibble on whenever you feel queasy. Even if you don’t feel too hungry, try to snack on something small. The key is to not allow your stomach to run on empty at any given time. 

 

3. Ginger Magic

Ginger has been hailed for centuries as a natural remedy for nausea. Ginger tea, ginger candies, or even ginger capsules can provide relief. The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger can soothe your stomach and help alleviate morning sickness symptoms. 

 

While this wasn’t my favorite remedy because of the potent flavor of ginger, it was truly the most effective at combating the nausea. A few times a day I would make ginger tea with a touch of honey and that almost immediately helped! Also the brand Upspring Stomach Settle ginger drops were the best for on the go relief.

4. Avoid Strong Smells

 Pregnancy can heighten your sense of smell. Certain odors that never bothered you before might now trigger nausea. Avoid strong-smelling foods, perfumes, or cleaning agents. Opt for well-ventilated spaces to minimize exposure to strong scents.

 

5. Fresh Air and Gentle Exercise

Taking a short walk in the fresh air can do wonders for your overall well-being. Sometimes, being cooped up indoors can worsen nausea. Going out also distracts you from thinking about the nausea and you even forget about it and find relief for a brief time. 

6. Acupressure Bands

Consider using acupressure bands, often used for motion sickness. These bands apply pressure to specific points on your wrists, which can help alleviate nausea. I used these and I was skeptical, but they actually work! I put them on first thing in the morning and didn’t take them off until bedtime. Even if it was a placebo effect, wouldn’t you try them? Now they make some that are much more discreet so you don’t have to worry about them clashing with your outfit or being asked about them when you’re out!

 

7. Rest

Sometimes nothing else does the trick like taking a good nap. Rest has so many benefits to help combat the effects of nausea, especially if you are actually throwing up. If you are overexerting yourself, resting helps to recover from that physical strain. It also helps to stabilize your blood sugar levels, improves digestion and reduces stress that can sometimes bring on symptoms of nausea. 

8. Consult Your Healthcare Provider

If your morning sickness is severe and persistent, don’t hesitate to consult your healthcare provider. They can prescribe safe anti-nausea medications that can provide relief without harming your baby.

Pregnancy is a beautiful and transformative time in a woman’s life, and morning sickness, as challenging as it may be, is often a temporary hurdle. Remember, every pregnancy is unique, and what works for one person might not work for another. Be patient with yourself and your body.
